Are you the right fit for a Dalmatian?
Contacting the breeder of your choice, getting approved, hanging out until the next picture appears on Facebook and finally, finally the day comes to bring your puppy home. It's exciting isn't it?!!
But.....what happens next?
He isn't just a puppy you've brought home, he is the newest member of your family. For the rest of his life.
And by family, I mean it.
Dalmatians are absolutely not an outside dog. They can be half outside, but that means half inside too. When you're inside for the night, they are too.
Don't feel like a 20-30kg lap dog? Do not get a Dalmatian
Don't feel like having unexpected kiss attacks to the face? Do not get a Dalmatian
Don't feel like winning the lottery of lovin? Do not get a Dalmatian
Don't feel like having a clown of a dog? You guessed it! Do not get a Dalmatian
So,
If you want all this good stuff, sounds like you might be a good fit for a Dalmatian!
Before you get too exited though, here is some information about the breed that you should read!
Dalmatian shed. A lot.
It's only twice a year though, 6 months each so you should be fine.
They don't actually shed anymore than any other short haired dog. Their hair is just white..and sticky.
Be prepared to say goodbye to your black clothes.
They are people dogs. They can't get enough of us! maybe it was all those days and nights alongside the carriages
I have two types of people Dalmatians. Yes, there is more than one type! how awesome right?!
Grayson is a "If I accept you as my people, you are my people" and that's that. He is happy to be with Me, Mum, Dad, My Aunty or Nanna. Does not care.
Norah is a "I have one mummy. This is my person" she does LOVE everyone she meets, but if I am not in the same room, she comes looking for me.
They love their food. I like to call them "Labradors with spots"
I sometimes catch Norah with her head in the food bag. This is never a good thing and Norah is cheeky. You should never allow your doggy to be overfed. Dallies especially are an "athletic" looking dog and should always keep their shape.
They are a guts breed. watch out.
They are an endurance breed. They were bred to run at a steady pace for lengths of time. This means that they will never seem to settle. They do though, and they go out like a light. Good luck moving a sleeping Dalmatian.
They have a habit of just...standing there. Grayson does this a heap and he is very good at it. He will be walking in front of you and the next second he just stops. The only way around is to go over and its quite awkward lifting your legs over a Dally, especially when he moves while you have one foot in the air. He does eventually move though, only when you have gone to the trouble of going past him. Funnest game ever!
They will run into you at a million miles an hour. Prepare for bruises!
They are fiercely loyal and protective of their people
